WASHINGTON, D.C. Republicans are demanding federal authorities open an investigation into President Biden's ties to Ukraine after reports of audio recordings of conversations with an alleged Burisma executive.
GOP lawmakers are demanding that FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland appoint a special counsel to look into the alleged bribery crimes and address the public’s “doubts” about the case and the integrity of law enforcement institutions.
This week, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., appeared on “America Reports” to make his case for greater investigation into the allegations.
“We’re entitled to see that document,” Kennedy said, referring to the FD-1023 form which suggests Joe Biden was paid $5 million by the executive of the Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings. “First, the FBI said, well, we can’t even tell you that it exists. And then they said, you can see it, but it has to be redacted. They won’t tell us whether they’ve even investigated the allegations.”
Kennedy argued that Wray and Garland are “the only people who can fix this” and that they “just won’t answer,” creating “doubts” among the American public.
The Republican senator suggested the situation is similar to the “suspicious activity reports” the Department of Treasury has on the Biden family. He added that the federal government must do something about the allegations - particularly in light of former President Trump's federal indictment.
Trump was indicted on 37 charges in a Miami courtroom earlier this week. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
The latest developments come after Wray agreed to turn the 1023 form over to congressional lawmakers, who are still demanding more action from the FBI and the DOJ.
Rep. James Comer, the House Oversight Chairman, said on Monday that the 1023 form may extend beyond a single document. He suggests there are more forms containing additional evidence of bribery linked to the Biden family.
At this time, it’s unclear how the federal investigators will move forward on the case. But the FBI and the DOJ will surely face increased pressure to investigate the matter in the coming weeks.
