Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s appearance before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday took a sharp turn into the unusual when a dispute over a pair of shoes briefly overshadowed a heated debate about U.S. foreign policy and the recent conflict with Iran.
The tense hearing featured repeated clashes between Rubio and Democratic lawmakers, who pressed him on a range of issues involving the Trump administration’s foreign policy decisions. But one exchange with Rep. Sara Jacobs of California stood out for a very different reason.
While criticizing Rubio’s testimony, Jacobs accused him of refusing to acknowledge facts, then referenced a reported gift from President Donald Trump.
“Mr. Secretary, it seems like you have an issue admitting facts… You couldn’t admit the shoes the president bought you were too big,” Jacobs said.
The comment appeared to catch Rubio off guard.
“I don’t know about the shoes. I mean, [Trump] gave me some Florsheim shoes that are actually pretty good, they fit fine, I don’t know what she’s talking about,” Rubio replied.
The issue did not end there. Moments later, Jacobs returned to the subject and complimented Rubio’s footwear.
“Your shoes look very nice today, Mr. Secretary,” she said.
That prompted an increasingly irritated response from Rubio, who questioned why the discussion had drifted so far from foreign policy matters.
“How can you see them? They’re way down here. We’re talking about shoes. Are you guys kidding me? I mean, is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or is this, like, a circus? What is this?” Rubio shot back.
The unusual exchange unfolded against the backdrop of a combative hearing that largely focused on the administration’s handling of Iran and broader foreign policy concerns. Democratic members repeatedly challenged Rubio over the administration’s decision-making process and raised questions about potential conflicts of interest involving President Trump.
Earlier in the hearing, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York asked whether Trump’s personal financial interests had ever influenced discussions related to military action against Iran or other major policy decisions.
Rubio rejected the suggestion without hesitation.
“Not once. Just to be clear, not a single time, not even for a millisecond, has the president ever discussed his personal economics and relations to war or any public policy that he's made, for that matter,” Rubio said. “And I've been in every one of his foreign policy meetings for the most part.”
As questioning continued, Rubio’s frustration became increasingly visible. He repeatedly argued that lawmakers were using their allotted time to make accusations while providing little opportunity for him to respond fully.
“What kind of thing is this? What is this? You know, you get asked questions for five minutes and you don't get time to answer. It's not a hearing,” Rubio complained.
Later, as another contentious exchange unfolded, he summed up his view of the proceedings with another pointed remark.
“Is this a dunk tank? What is this?”
By the end of the session, a hearing intended to focus on international affairs had produced several headline-grabbing moments, including a debate over presidentially gifted shoes that Rubio insisted fit just fine.
