House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries found himself on the defensive Monday during a television interview that quickly turned into an uncomfortable exchange over gas prices, inflation, and the economic record of recent Democratic administrations.
Appearing on Good Day New York, the New York Democrat criticized President Donald Trump and argued that recent events had contributed to rising costs for Americans. In making his case, Jeffries pointed to what he described as “skyrocketing gas prices.”

“It was a reckless war of choice that has obviously cost the American people significantly, particularly as it relates to skyrocketing gas prices in an environment where the cost of living was already too high,” Jeffries said.
The claim immediately ran into pushback from the hosts. At the center of the disagreement was whether current fuel prices support Jeffries’ argument and how they compare to prices seen during previous administrations.
Anchor Rosanna Scotto challenged Jeffries by pointing to recent history and reminding viewers that gas prices climbed sharply under both former President Barack Obama and former President Joe Biden.
“Gas prices were up under Obama, too. And Biden, right?” Scotto asked.
When Jeffries attempted to respond, Scotto followed up with a more specific question.
“Didn’t we have gas prices over $5.00?”
Jeffries acknowledged the increase but attempted to explain it by referencing conditions following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Well, there were gas prices in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic situation...” he said.
The exchange appeared to catch Jeffries off guard as Scotto continued pressing him on the issue. National average gasoline prices did exceed $5 per gallon during June 2022, a period when the Biden administration faced sustained criticism over inflation, energy policy, and rising household costs. At the time, administration officials often pointed to global market disruptions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as major contributing factors.
The interview did not stop with fuel prices. Scotto also brought up another politically sensitive topic for Democrats: grocery costs.

Referencing the surge in egg prices that became a symbol of broader inflation concerns during the Biden years, she joked that eggs had once been “like $12 a dozen.” While the figure was exaggerated for emphasis, egg prices did reach historically elevated levels during portions of Biden’s presidency before falling significantly in subsequent years.
The broader issue for Jeffries was not simply the facts being debated but the difficulty he appeared to have responding to direct questions about economic conditions that many voters still remember vividly. Inflation, fuel costs, and grocery prices remain among the most persistent political issues in the country, and Republicans have frequently argued that Democrats underestimate how deeply those price increases affected household budgets.
For Democratic leaders, those topics remain challenging because they require defending an economic period that many voters associate with financial strain. For Republicans, the comparison provides a ready-made argument that conditions have improved since Trump returned to office.
