Protests are a fundamental part of democratic expression, but there are unwritten rules that any reasonable person should understand. Showing up at someone’s home—or even claiming to “coincidentally” cross paths with them in their private life—is a violation of those norms. And to do so while they are with their young child? He explained the administration’s position, emphasizing the goal of ending the war through diplomatic efforts. It was a measured, thoughtful response—exactly the kind of temperament one hopes to see in a vice president.
Now, imagine for a moment if the roles were reversed. Picture former Vice President Kamala Harris being approached like this, with a toddler in tow.
First, there’s little doubt the media would be in full meltdown mode, decrying the incident as an attack on democracy, an invasion of privacy, and a sign of rising extremism. But here? The reaction has been muted, with some, like former CNN correspondent John Harwood, offering little more than dismissive commentary. The hypocrisy is glaring.
Beyond the political double standard, the situation raises another pressing question: how did these activists get so close to Vance and his daughter in the first place?
In today’s climate, with political tensions running high and security threats ever-present—especially in light of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump—there is no room for lapses in protective measures.
