Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced on Saturday that she is freezing her eggs while using the moment to attack the Trump administration. The New York Democrat shared this news in a series of Instagram Story videos.
She stated she had considered the procedure for a long time. "I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs," Ocasio-Cortez said. For quite some time, she stated that she had been setting aside funds for it. Per Fox News, she wants to feel more in control of her future.
Ocasio-Cortez noted that serving in Congress at a young age forced her to grow up in public. "When you get elected young, you have to grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately," she said.
She hopes her story helps normalize talks about fertility and menopause. She believes women are not taught enough about their own bodies. "As women in general, we are not taught about our bodies," she told her followers.
After sharing her personal choice, Ocasio-Cortez quickly turned her focus to politics. She blamed the Trump administration for creating a hostile environment for women. She argued that female politicians face scrutiny that men do not.
She called this extra pressure a "political tax" on women who share their lives. She claimed advances in technology have made these procedures more accessible. Yet she framed her choice as a way to fight back against current policies.
She emphasized that she wants to show women having full lives in every context. "I think we need to show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choice," she added. She acknowledged that being able to freeze eggs is a privilege.
She also said she feels empowered to make this choice regardless of assumptions. "This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life," she said. Her comments came as she criticized the broader healthcare system for causing anxiety.
