Smith Testifies Before House Committee

The aftermath of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s aggressive prosecution of former President Donald Trump has taken a dramatic new turn. After being grilled for hours before the House Judiciary Committee, Smith now finds himself in the crosshairs of Trump himself—this time not just as a political opponent, but as a potential defendant.

“Based on his testimony today, there is no question that Deranged Jack Smith should be prosecuted for his actions,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, calling out what he described as Smith’s legacy of destruction and unethical conduct. “At a minimum, he committed large scale perjury!”

Smith’s appearance before the committee marked a critical moment of accountability in a saga that has tested the boundaries of justice, politics, and the Constitution. Under pointed questioning, Smith was asked to explain his sweeping investigation—one that included the subpoenaing of President Trump’s personal phone records, the government turnover of his official communications, and the targeting of multiple Republican lawmakers.

According to the Judiciary Committee, Smith authorized toll record subpoenas without apparent regard for whether those communications were protected under the Constitution.

The committee’s own remarks were damning. “Smith chose to target President Trump, and only President Trump, in his electors case—setting aside other targets so that he could secure an indictment… in advance of the election,” a statement read.

That election, notably, ended in a landslide victory for Trump over former Vice President Kamala Harris, after which four felony charges tied to Smith’s January 6 investigation were quietly dropped.

To Trump and his supporters, the optics are unmistakable. A sitting administration allowed the prosecution of its chief political rival in the midst of an election season. And now, months later, the same charges have evaporated—just as quickly as they were leveled.

In his testimony and public record, Smith defended his investigation as apolitical and focused on justice. But Trump remains unrelenting in his counterattack, labeling Smith a “deranged animal” and accusing him of weaponizing the legal system. “If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him, and far worse,” Trump wrote.
