A Quick Shift in Maine Politics
Former logger Troy Jackson is poised to become the new Democratic Senate nominee in Maine. He will replace Graham Platner, who dropped out after facing sexual assault allegations that he denied. This change comes just weeks before the general election. The party needs a candidate who can unite them quickly to take on incumbent Susan Collins.
According to reports, Jackson secured a massive lead in delegate votes over the weekend. Other candidates like Nirav Shah and Shenna Bellows stepped aside to help the party win. Shah said they must defeat Collins to succeed. Now Jackson faces the hard task of raising money against a well-funded opponent.
The Delegate Count and the Road Ahead
The process to pick a new nominee was fast and unusual. Maine Democrats held county meetings to select delegates for the convention in Bangor. American Grits readers know that unity is key, but time is short. There are less than 100 days until voters cast their ballots. Washington Times reports that Jackson's campaign claims to have 481 delegates committed to him.
That number is a strong majority of the 601 delegates gathering this weekend. ABC News notes that Jackson comes from a logging family near the Quebec border. He is a familiar face with a long history as a state lawmaker. Bernie Sanders has already endorsed him. This support helps, but Collins still holds a huge financial edge.
Other candidates dropped out to clear the path. Jordan Wood released a video saying his campaign was suspending operations. He praised Jackson as a friend and a man he trusts. Wood stated, "I'm so proud to endorse my friend Troy Jackson." He believes Jackson will serve all people in Maine.
Folks, if you want to know how silly and incompetently stupid the Democrats are just look at Maine.

The writing was on the wall when it came to Platner; the guy was a nut, but the Dems dove into the deep end with him just like they did with sleepy Joe Biden. One would think they would have learned their lesson after Joe Biden, but no, they did it again.
When you really think about it, I don't think they are vetting candidates, which is fine with me. Keep it up and I hope they enjoy losing.
