Governor Orders National Guard To Mobilize As A Precautionary Measure

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the deployment of the National Guard statewide in response to escalating anti-ICE protests that have erupted in major cities across the Lone Star State. The directive, issued late Tuesday, follows days of unrest tied to opposition against President Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.

In a post on X, Abbott emphasized that while peaceful protest remains protected under law, criminal behavior would not be tolerated. “Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal & will lead to arrest,” he wrote, affirming that the Texas National Guard will support law enforcement with “every tool & strategy” necessary to maintain stability.

His announcement comes amid intensifying protests in Dallas and Austin, with more actions scheduled in San Antonio later this week. The demonstrations, triggered by the Trump administration’s aggressive deportation and detention policies, have sparked clashes between protesters and police.

In Austin, police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse crowds after multiple warnings to vacate roadways were ignored. Governor Abbott confirmed that more than a dozen arrests were made. A federal building used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement was defaced with graffiti, including slogans such as “ICE NEEDS 2 SURRENDER & RELEASE THE HOSTAGES.”

Six individuals arrested during the Austin protest face serious charges, including felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest.

Abbott reiterated the limits of lawful assembly in a subsequent post, stating: “Peaceful protesting is legal. But once you cross the line, you will be arrested,” punctuating his message with the acronym “FAFO” — a blunt warning against unlawful behavior.

The group behind the Texas protests, “No Kings,” has announced coordinated actions in all 50 states this Saturday, coinciding with a large-scale U.S. Army parade in Washington, D.C., to celebrate President Trump’s birthday. Trump is expected to be in attendance.

Abbott’s office confirmed that National Guard units would be stationed in strategic locations to respond swiftly if demonstrations escalate.
