Duffy Holds Press Conference Following Crash

Federal officials are pushing back against speculation surrounding a fatal runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, as investigators work to determine the precise cause of the incident. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated Monday that the airport was adequately staffed at the time of the crash, directly rejecting claims that a shortage of air traffic controllers contributed to the घटना.

The collision occurred late Sunday night and involved Air Canada Flight 8646 and a Port Authority fire truck operating on the airfield.

Emergency response protocols and air traffic coordination are now under close examination, with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) leading the investigation. Officials have emphasized that conclusions about causation will depend on a full review of communications, procedures, and operational conditions at the time.

Audio recordings from air traffic control have circulated publicly, capturing a controller instructing the fire truck to stop, followed shortly by an acknowledgment of an error. Additional audio includes another voice stating that efforts were made under the circumstances. These recordings have fueled questions about staffing levels and decision-making during the incident.

Addressing reporters at a press briefing alongside New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Duffy declined to discuss operational specifics under investigation but made a clear exception regarding staffing claims.

He stated that reports suggesting only one air traffic controller was on duty were inaccurate, describing LaGuardia as “a well-staffed airport” relative to national standards.

Duffy acknowledged broader, ongoing challenges in maintaining and expanding the air traffic control workforce nationwide. He said the Department of Transportation is actively working to retain experienced personnel while accelerating the training pipeline for new controllers. Despite these efforts, he stressed that staffing at LaGuardia did not fall below necessary levels at the time of the crash.

The incident has also renewed calls for increased federal funding for aviation infrastructure and workforce development. Duffy urged Congress to approve additional resources, framing aviation safety as a bipartisan priority. He argued that sustained investment is necessary to modernize systems, support staffing needs, and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.
