A Colorado apartment complex is now up for sale after being overrun by the violent Venezuelan prison gang, *Tren de Aragua*, forcing its landlord to make a tough decision. Zev Baumgarten, the owner of Aspen Grove apartments in Aurora, Colorado, has been battling city officials who accused him of allowing the property to deteriorate into what they called a “trash-ridden, gang-infested hellhole.” The situation escalated to the point where Baumgarten’s company has agreed to sell, lease, or find another resolution for the complex.
Aspen Grove was officially shut down in August, displacing 300 residents after city leaders declared it a "criminal nuisance." Videos circulating online showed gang members breaking into apartments, and the complex had become a symbol of growing lawlessness in the area. Baumgarten had previously sent letters pleading for police intervention, claiming the gang had “forcibly taken control” of the property. However, the city’s patience ran out, and officials moved to evict residents and shut down the complex entirely.

This isn’t the only troubled property Baumgarten owns. A second complex, Fitzsimons Place, was also shuttered in August due to long-standing building code violations dating back to 2020, ranging from vermin infestations to ongoing power outages.
Both properties have reportedly been overrun by migrant gang members, part of a larger crisis plaguing the Denver suburb. Aurora has been particularly hard-hit, with its opposition to Denver’s “sanctuary city” policies allowing over 42,000 migrants into the region.
Despite this chaos, Colorado’s Democrat Governor Jared Polis seems unconvinced that the issue is as severe as local leaders claim. In response to the uproar surrounding *Tren de Aragua*’s presence, Polis’s office issued a dismissive statement, suggesting the gang’s takeover is more “imagination” than reality. The governor’s spokesperson, Shelby Wieman, downplayed the concerns raised by Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky, who has been vocal about the impact of illegal immigration on the community.

“The Governor has already let the Mayor know that the State is ready to support the local police department with assistance from state troopers and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation if needed,” Wieman told *The New York Post*. However, she also suggested that the gang’s presence was exaggerated, calling it a feature of Jurinsky’s imagination.
The disconnect between state officials and local leaders has only intensified frustrations among Aurora residents, who feel their concerns are being brushed aside. For many, the fear is real, and the collapse of properties like Aspen Grove and Fitzsimons Place reflects a much larger problem. The takeover by *Tren de Aragua* has left a lasting impact on this community, and whether or not the state will take decisive action remains to be seen.
