Here we go again, folks. Yet another example of corporate media trying to spin a narrative no one asked for.
Let’s cut through the nonsense: the reason the WNBA is seeing a surge in popularity is spelled out in two simple words—Caitlin Clark. But CBS, in some alternate reality, would have you believe otherwise.
During the latest episode of 60 Minutes, correspondent Jon Wertheim managed to drop what might be one of the most absurd takes of the year. While sitting down with Clark and other WNBA players, Wertheim stated that, despite Clark’s Rookie of the Year accolades, the real "breakthrough star" this season isn’t Clark—it’s the WNBA itself.
That’s right, the same league that’s struggled for years to get eyes on the screen is now apparently the big attraction, not the player single-handedly carrying it on her back.
they love her down 😭😭😭😭😭😭 “the haters vs. caitlin clark” is crazy, thank u colts 🫡pic.twitter.com/b2ptDsx84G

Let’s be real here: the WNBA’s newfound attention has a lot more to do with Clark’s star power than any sudden love for the league. Clark’s bringing in the fans, she’s packing the stands, and her highlights are what people are tuning in for.
Anyone claiming otherwise is out here trying to rewrite reality. Look at the numbers. Look at the tickets being sold. Look at the NFL games where Caitlin Clark is getting standing ovations! Are we seeing this for any other WNBA player? Crickets.
But here’s CBS, playing gatekeeper, trying to push the idea that the league is the real story. Give me a break. If it weren’t for Caitlin Clark, would anyone care enough to cover the WNBA on 60 Minutes? Would they even bump Big Brother to fit in an interview with anyone else? Absolutely not.
Wertheim’s comment is just the latest example of the media downplaying the obvious—trying to elevate something that’s been a snoozefest for years while dismissing the real reason people are paying attention. Nobody was watching the WNBA until Clark showed up, and suddenly we’re supposed to believe it’s the league that’s the breakthrough star?
