Trump Criticizes Judge After Comments in Harvard Hearing

President Donald Trump sharply criticized U.S. District Judge Allison D. Burroughs on Monday, labeling her a “total disaster” ahead of her pending ruling in a high-profile federal funding case involving Harvard University. Burroughs, an Obama appointee, presided over a Boston hearing as the Trump administration defended its decision to withhold over $2 billion in federal funds from the Ivy League institution.

The legal dispute centers on Harvard’s lawsuit against the administration following Trump’s move to suspend funding due to the university’s alleged tolerance of antisemitic activity and its continued promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The administration argued that Harvard displayed “deliberate indifference to antisemitism,” thereby forfeiting its entitlement to taxpayer dollars.

Both parties requested a summary judgment to avoid a full trial. However, the hearing concluded without a ruling. Judge Burroughs appeared skeptical of the government’s case, criticizing the lack of formal procedure or documentation used to assess Harvard’s response to antisemitism.

“I don’t think you can justify a contract action based on impermissible suppression of speech,” Burroughs stated. “Where do I have that wrong?”

Trump responded swiftly on Truth Social. “The Harvard case was just tried in Massachusetts before an Obama appointed Judge. She is a TOTAL DISASTER,” he wrote. “She has systematically taken over the various Harvard cases, and is an automatic ‘loss’ for the People of our Country!”

Trump also questioned how Burroughs consistently receives Harvard-related cases and pledged to appeal any unfavorable ruling. “When she rules against us, we will IMMEDIATELY appeal, and WIN.”

The administration’s funding freeze followed months of scrutiny over pro-Palestinian protests and antisemitic incidents on college campuses, including Harvard. Trump has accused the university of promoting anti-Israel sentiment and fostering an environment hostile to religious and patriotic values. “Harvard has $52 Billion Dollars sitting in the Bank, and yet they are anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, and anti-America,” he wrote.

Harvard attorney Steven P. Lehotsky argued that the administration’s move violates the First Amendment and represents a dangerous federal overreach into private academic governance. “This threatens not just Harvard, but the autonomy of private institutions nationwide,” he stated.

The administration maintained that federal funding is conditional and subject to review, particularly when institutions fail to address civil rights violations.
