What actually happened is a lot messier for the GOP. Sen. Mitch McConnell is back at home, but he is not back in the Senate. He walked out of the rehab center on Thursday, August 6, 2026, according to RedState. Yet, he will not be casting votes anytime soon.

McConnell has been away from the Capitol for nearly two months. He fell at his home in mid-June. According to police audio referenced by the Washington Times, first responders discovered him unconscious.. He was rushed to the hospital. He spent weeks in a rehab facility.
He is clear on the big medical fears. In a statement, he said, "My doctors have confirmed that I didn't break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn't have a heart attack or a stroke. I don't have any tumors or hemorrhages."
But the recovery is still hard work. During the past several weeks of receiving excellent care, I have also contended with a mild case of pneumonia. Now he is home to heal.
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday he has been discharged from a rehabilitation facility after a fall at his Kentucky home in mid-June that left him hospitalized.
"Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff," he said, referring to his wife, Elaine Chao.

McConnell said he will remain at home during the Senate's upcoming state work period as he continues his recovery.
Here is the thing that matters most to your community. The Senate needs votes to pass laws and confirm judges. McConnell has missed 51 roll call votes between June 15 and August 5, according to a government tracker reported by the Daily Wire.
