Mamdani Issues Statement Following Incident During Protest

New details have emerged following a chaotic confrontation near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the New York City mayor, where a device was thrown at police during an “anti-Islamification” protest. What initially circulated in early reports as a possible smoke device or hoax has now taken on far more serious implications.

According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the object deployed during the protest was not a harmless device. After a preliminary analysis by the NYPD Bomb Squad, authorities determined that the device was a functioning improvised explosive device capable of causing significant harm.

“The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb,” Tisch said in a statement. “It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.”

Investigators are continuing their analysis and are also examining a second device connected to the incident. The situation quickly escalated into a federal matter, with the NYPD now coordinating with the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York through the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

Two suspects were arrested at the scene: Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi. Both men remain in custody as authorities investigate their alleged involvement in deploying the explosive device. Early confusion about Kayumi’s identity appears to have been corrected after initial reports listed a different name.

Fox News reporter Bill Melugin noted that both suspects are believed to be U.S. citizens. Reports from the scene also indicated that one of the men allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the incident, a detail investigators may examine as they attempt to determine motive.

Meanwhile, the political response to the incident has quickly become a subject of controversy. Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a statement condemning violence at protests while also criticizing the organizer of the demonstration, Jake Lang, whom he described as promoting racism and bigotry.

“Yesterday, white supremacist Jake Lang organized a protest outside Gracie Mansion rooted in bigotry and racism,” Mamdani said. “Such hate has no place in New York City.”

The mayor continued by condemning the use of violence and praising police officers for responding quickly to the threat.

“Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are,” Mamdani added.

Critics of the statement argue that it obscured key details of the incident, particularly the identities of the suspects and the direction of the attack. Some observers noted that without additional context, the statement could leave readers with the impression that the protest organizers or participants were responsible for the explosive device.

Law enforcement officials, however, remain focused on the criminal investigation itself. With federal authorities now involved and forensic analysis continuing, investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the device and whether the incident meets the legal threshold for terrorism-related charges.
