Special Counsel Jack Smith took personal checks from everyday Americans. He grabbed them months before the 2020 election. The goal was an investigation into the Jan. 6 events. But the net cast much wider.
Senator Chuck Grassley revealed the scope of the seizure. He stated Smith's team acquired at least 4,782 checks from Americans. These donors made mainly small-dollar gifts to President Donald Trump. The window ran from September 2019 to August 2023, per The Federalist.
These were not just paper slips. The subpoenas took bank account numbers and routing details. They also took home addresses and the donors' true signatures. The Daily Caller reported that these checks came from people in all 50 states. The sweep even included Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
The senator did not hold back during a hearing. He told Smith there was no legal reason for this grab. Grassley noted that the staff killed an investigation into the Clinton campaign while doing this. He said, "No matter what you say, there's no legitimate basis for what you did."
Grassley argued that Republican donations were not needed for the probe. He pointed out that Smith's public report never mentioned these groups. "Donations to Republican groups wasn't necessary to your investigation," Grassley said. That statement was also noted by The Washington Examiner.
The data is now in government hands forever. Grassley warned that the Justice Department and FBI will keep these records. He declared that the Justice Department and the FBI will permanently hold thousands of individuals' addresses, phone numbers, bank details, account numbers, routing numbers, and authentic signatures.
Jack Smith did not deny taking the financial info. When asked if he got donor data, he answered simply. "Yes, we acquired financial information," Smith said.
Smith tried to explain why he issued so many subpoenas. He claimed he had a duty to collect facts. He said he was investigating "attempts to block the peaceful transfers of power." But the data included checks as small as $5. Some went as high as $1,000. The range covered everyday folks, not just big donors.
Smith could not list every subpoena on the spot. He added that he was conducting a criminal investigation into "one of the most serious crimes that's ever happened in our nation's history."
The documents show a clear pattern of data collection. The FBI now holds the bank details of thousands of regular voters. This includes their home addresses and phone numbers. The checks were part of an operation codenamed "Arctic Frost." It formally began in April 2022.
Senator Grassley released these disclosures to show the full extent. He claimed the administration used powerful tools to spy on Republicans. The reports from The Federalist, The Daily Caller, and The Washington Examiner all detail the same numbers. The government has the signatures and the bank routes of 4,782 people.
That is the hard fact on the record. The Justice Department holds the private financial data of thousands of Americans.
