Hasan Piker Event At University Of Texas Sparks Chaos And Security Costs

Left-wing personality Hasan Piker was set to speak at the University of Texas this Wednesday.

What actually happened was a chaotic scramble for space and money. The event organizers needed more room than the school would give. The school refused to move the event to a bigger hall. Now the club is fighting for seats and security funds.

The club booked the William C. Powers Jr. Student Activity Center. This room holds 465 seats in its auditorium. The auditorium's seating capacity fell far short of the overwhelming demand. Organizers tried to secure a larger venue. The effort was unsuccessful.

The school refused to accommodate the club's request. They also claimed the university rejected a request for the 1,000-seat Hogg Memorial Auditorium. The student organization says that hall was available at a later date. As a result, the University Democrats were forced to return thousands of tickets. Piker remains accessible solely to the initial 400 to 500 ticket holders.

The University Democrats said they face pressure from politicians like Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, and Ken Paxton. They also face threats and high costs. "Despite the pressure from MAGA politicians like Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, Ken Paxton, some Democrats, threats against us, and tens of thousands of dollars in security costs, this event will still take place as planned," the group said in a statement on Sunday.

Political leaders have pushed back hard on the event. A spokesperson for Gov. Greg Abbott spoke to Jewish Insider earlier this month. "Hasan Piker said America deserved 9/11 and praised the brutal terrorist organization Hamas," the spokesperson told Jewish Insider. The University Democrats at UT Austin are opting to boost that repugnant rhetoric. Terrorist sympathizers have no place in Texas.

The club accused the university of charging high fees. As of Monday morning, roughly $2,400 of the $25,000 goal has been raised.

The Washington Examiner contacted the University of Texas for comment on the club's allegation regarding security fees. The event remains controversial due to Piker's comments about Jews and Israel. Republicans have tried linking the streamer to Michigan Democrat Abdul el Sayed. Following bipartisan backlash, El Sayed has attempted to separate himself from Piker.

Owner of an off-campus venue also backed out. The owner backtracked on hosting Piker's event after the University Democrats signed a contract with the third party. The school stands firm on its venue limits. The club stands firm on its right to speak.

Security costs remain a major hurdle.
