Andrew Gillum came within fewer than 34,000 votes of becoming governor of Florida in 2018. Today, the former Democratic rising star is facing new criminal charges after an arrest in Alabama that has once again thrust his personal struggles into the spotlight.
According to police in Daphne, Alabama, Gillum was arrested on the night of July 2 after officers observed what they described as erratic driving along U.S. Highway 98 near North Main Street. The traffic stop reportedly took a more serious turn when an officer saw a glass pipe sitting on the vehicle's center console, giving police probable cause to conduct a search.
Authorities say the search uncovered several rolled marijuana cigarettes along with three packages containing a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Gillum, 46, was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony under Alabama law, and second-degree marijuana possession, a Class A misdemeanor. He was initially booked into the Daphne City Jail before being transferred to the Baldwin County Correctional Facility. Jail records show he was later released. As of Tuesday, court records related to the case had not yet been made publicly available, and it was unclear whether Gillum had retained legal counsel to comment on the charges.
The arrest marks another chapter in a public downfall that has unfolded over several years.
In 2018, Gillum was one of the Democratic Party's brightest prospects. As the former mayor of Tallahassee, he captured the Democratic nomination for governor and quickly became a national figure. Former President Barack Obama campaigned on his behalf, progressive groups poured resources into Florida, and Democrats viewed the race as one of their best opportunities to flip a major swing state during the first Trump midterm elections.
Gillum ultimately lost to Republican Ron DeSantis by less than one percentage point, one of the closest gubernatorial races in modern Florida history. More than four million Floridians voted for him, and for many Democrats, he appeared destined for a prominent national role regardless of the outcome.
That trajectory began to unravel less than two years later.
In 2020, Gillum was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room where another man had apparently suffered a drug overdose. Police said Gillum was too impaired to answer questions at the scene. No criminal charges resulted from that incident.
Shortly afterward, Gillum announced he was stepping away from public life to seek treatment for alcohol abuse and depression.
"This has been a wake-up call for me," Gillum said at the time. "Since my race for governor ended, I fell into a depression that has led to alcohol abuse."
His legal troubles continued in 2022 when federal prosecutors charged him in connection with allegations involving campaign-related funds. Gillum was acquitted of making false statements to the FBI, while the remaining charges ended in a mistrial and were later dismissed.
Despite those setbacks, Gillum gradually returned to public life. He now co-hosts the political podcast Native Land Pod alongside Angela Rye and Bakari Sellers, frequently commenting on national politics and current events.
The Alabama case is still in its earliest stages, and the allegations remain unproven until resolved in court. Even so, the arrest serves as another reminder of how dramatically Gillum's public career has changed since 2018.
Eight years ago, Florida voters faced one of the closest gubernatorial elections in the state's history. Gillum came within a whisker of leading America's third-largest state. Instead, DeSantis narrowly prevailed and went on to win reelection in 2022 by nearly 20 percentage points, becoming one of the country's most recognizable Republican governors.
Looking back at that razor-thin election, the contrast between the two political careers has only grown sharper. One went on to become a national Republican figure, while the other now finds himself once again facing criminal charges and an uncertain legal future.
