Rep. Maria Salazar may be eloquent, accomplished, and politically ambitious, but when it comes to immigration policy and the mood of the Republican base, she’s completely off-key. Her recent push for an amnesty bill—presented as a well-meaning, compassionate gesture—lands like a lead balloon in a political climate where voters are demanding the opposite: law, order, and borders that mean something.
Salazar’s proposal doesn’t just misread the room—it misreads the country.

Let’s start with the reality on the ground. Hispanics didn’t shift rightward over the last two election cycles because Republicans softened on immigration. They moved toward Trump despite his hardline policies—because many agreed with them. These voters, particularly from countries like Venezuela, Cuba, and even Mexico, have lived through the consequences of lawless regimes, broken economies, and corrupt elites. They didn’t flee socialism and criminal chaos to watch America import more of it through open borders and blanket amnesty.
The data back this up. Border apprehensions reached record highs under the Biden administration. Cities like New York, which became de facto sanctuaries for illegal immigrants, are now straining under the weight of their own open-arms policies. The result? Overcrowded shelters, overwhelmed services, surging crime, and deepening resentment among legal residents—many of whom are immigrants themselves. And the political consequence? A self-proclaimed socialist now sits in the mayor’s office, while working-class families ask why their tax dollars are subsidizing chaos.

Salazar seems to believe that a party moving forward needs to soften its tone and “welcome” people into the fold through sweeping legislative forgiveness. But this approach ignores the core principle that built the Republican resurgence: the rule of law matters. Amnesty—especially when framed as a compassionate compromise—undercuts every effort to enforce immigration law and restore border security.
A year ago, Latinos made GOP history.
