Code On Website Raises Eyebrows

So much for that “new way forward” Kamala Harris promised. After nearly two months of dodging the media and sidestepping any substantive discussion on her presidential agenda, Harris has finally released an Issues page on her campaign website. But instead of offering a fresh vision, what we’re looking at is essentially Joe Biden's old playbook dressed up in new clothes—or should we say, a poorly copied version of it. As it turns out, Harris didn’t just borrow Biden's policies; she outright lifted them from his campaign page. Yes, the irony here is thick.

The New Republic broke the story, revealing that a quick peek behind the code of Harris’ newly published Issues page exposes direct copy-pasting from Biden's previous campaign site. In a twist that could only happen in modern politics, Joe Biden—the same guy who once infamously plagiarized a speech from British politician Neil Kinnock and faced accusations of academic plagiarism in law school—has now been plagiarized by his own successor of choice. The man who’s long struggled with originality has had his ideas stolen by the candidate who claims to represent "new" leadership.

But wait, it gets worse. Not only did Harris' team fail to hide this laziness by neglecting to rephrase or rework the content, they didn’t even bother to retype it. Instead, they copied the text straight from Biden’s campaign website, bringing over the very code itself, making it ridiculously easy to uncover the plagiarism. In an age where political campaigns invest millions into optics and strategy, this level of incompetence is nothing short of embarrassing.

This debacle follows a pattern with Harris' campaign, which has been marked by ambiguity and the absence of concrete policies. Harris, once a champion of progressive causes like gun buybacks, Medicare for All, and fracking bans, has conveniently jettisoned these positions without providing much clarity on where she stands now. Over the summer, her few policy proposals included targeting price gouging in grocery stores and eliminating taxes on tips—policies that received broad criticism, including from economists. Even her tip-tax policy was a recycled idea that originated from, of all people, Donald Trump.

The Harris campaign seemed content to ride a wave of good vibes from the summer without taking any real policy risks. But as they’re now discovering, a lack of substance has its own set of pitfalls. The absence of policies made Harris look directionless, a candidate without a vision, and now the ones she has rolled out are so flimsy they’re already being torn apart for their lack of originality.

What’s most striking about this revelation is how it confirms the worst fears about Harris—that she is merely a continuation of the Biden administration without any fresh ideas or initiative. Even when finally pressed to lay out her vision for the country, she couldn’t come up with anything new. Instead, she plagiarized the man she’s supposed to replace, all while pretending to offer something different.

And now, as we approach her much-anticipated debate against Donald Trump, one has to wonder how she’ll defend these “values” she’s stolen. Will she even recognize them? Can she even make a coherent case for why her candidacy represents anything other than a third term of Joe Biden? Or will this just further cement the image of Kamala Harris as an empty suit, lacking originality and substance?

Nancy Pelosi may insist that she’s happy with Biden staying in the race but just wants a better campaign. But with Harris at the forefront, what she’s really endorsing is more of the same—a floundering campaign led by a candidate who doesn’t even bother to plagiarize competently. And that’s a hard sell for anyone, no matter which side of the aisle you're on.
